We are between the ages of 18 and 25. Living in the Parisian area, we come
from very different backgrounds and circumstances: students of all ages, the
unemployed, salaried employees, young graduates, etc. Our paths have crossed
at the Association "Voix d’Elles Rebelles." This
feminist (but not sexist) organization welcomes and orients people in
difficulty. It supports equal access for all people to education, health care,
and citizenship. During the month of February 1997, the idea was conceived
within the Association (the manager of the project) to form a partnership with
the hospital of Nosy-Bé in Madagascar and render them aid over the course of
five years.
The first stage of this partnership commenced in December of 1998 with
the rehabilitation of the pediatric and maternity services. Children are
the first victims of the insufficient medical supplies and the lack of
hygiene. The equipment that they have is obsolete or defective. The
hospital has only one source of water, constructed thanks to a grant
left by a Sister of the Congregation of Divine Providence (one of our
partners in Madagascar). They and their colleagues (doctors, nurses, etc;)
work tirelessly for the sick people of the hospital of Nosy-Bé.
This
project is equally for the goal of promoting (subtly) exchanges between
the North and South, as well as for developing the sense of
responsibility and the solidarity of all the participants in this
project—a collective task towards a humanitarian end.
Our project is the godchild of the "French Federation of Houses of Youth
and Culture" and has received funding from the Secretary of state for
the Peace Corps, of the prefecture of the Seine St. Denis, but also from
private donors such as Cartier International. We participate in
different block garage sales and neighborhood festivals to spread the
word about the project and sell postcards for the hospital. Nevertheless,
the funds we have gathered by this time are still insufficient.
Your support and your donations contribute
to the improvement of the conditions and lives of the children of the
Nosy-Be hospital.
