In addition, the Association works closely with the social services,
scholastic institutions, other associations (such as "Enfance
Maltraitée" (Abused Children), "SOS
femmes battues" (SOS Battered Women), and "la
ligue des Droits de l’Homme" (The Human Rights League)), various
shelters and rehabilitation centers, and works hands-on within the community.
Generally, our objective is to promote
the rights of women and young girls, particularly those who are the
children of immigrants, whatever their ethnicity or religious beliefs, and to
work towards their complete integration into society. We are particularly interested in helping young women who live in precarious economic and/or social conditions :
The living conditions of these young women are, most of the time, aggravated by the existence of a role, dictated by their sex, which they are "supposed" to assume. They are often required by their families to take charge of the cleaning, remain "pure" until marriage, and submit to the will of their fathers and brothers (and sometimes mothers) in all things. They cannot go out at night and cannot travel without their family. The problems of these second generation immigrant girls are often ignored or neglected by our society. People point out their academic success. Unfortunately, the reality is very different. During discussions we have had with these girls through the Association, we have discovered that many of them have only a mediocre education. The young girls and women who seek our help often evince destructive tendencies. Incapable of dealing with the problems they are faced with, they adopt self-destructive behaviors (drug abuse, suicide attempts, prostitution, scholastic failure, delinquency, etc.). They are searching for foundations on which to rebuild their personalities; they want to create their own values to liberate themselves from their familial constraints. They also need to live harmoniously in a society that sometimes perpetuates prejudices against their families. The continual rejection from both their families and society provokes an identity crisis. To help alleviate this, the Association has created a psychological support service, to which five psychologists donate their time. Requests for this service have steadily increased since its inception, and more and more people are on the waiting lists for sessions. Our objective is not only to aid these women to construct a better future, but also to permit them to acquire the confidence to live as full and happy citizens. These young women will be called upon to fulfill a key role in our society, as they represent an important aspect of social integration at a time when the question of the suburbs (banlieues) is a serious issue. We think that upon their shoulders rests the future of education, family unity, and integration into the work force. We consider these young women to be the dawning of a new day!
The Association
is a tool for promoting the Rights and the
Liberation of Women. Though feminist, "Voix
d’Elles Rebelles" (Rebellious Voices) is not a sexist
association. It is devoted to the
Secular and Democratic Values of France. It is involved in
the social-humanist, pacifistic struggle for the well-being &
self-fulfillment of the individual. It is concerned with the
safeguarding of the individual’s rights and dignity. The Association
" Voix d’Elles-Rebelles " was
created by French women and young girls, immigrants and the
children of immigrants. It is open to women of all ages and origins,
without distinctions of race, religion, class, etc. "Voix d’Elles Rebelles"
is equally a space for community reflection and friendship where
women find themselves again by working with groups of women towards a
common goal regarding social and cultural plans.
